Some say that ignorance is bliss and they’re right, sort of. There is the bliss of sleeping with someone without a care in the world, not thinking for one second that you can catch HIV. But that bliss turns into a nightmare a few months later when a doctor makes that ugly diagnosis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a new HIV Surveillance Report that contains an HIV map of infections all across the United States. The study presented some interesting findings about the manner by which the disease spreads throughout the country. One telling result is that there is a large smear of dark (map above) colors all across the south, where the disease appears to be out of control.
Oddly enough, according to ThinkProgress.org, these states lack adequate education requirements to teach s*xual health to young people, since some of their parents seem to think that if they don’t talk to their kids about “doing it,” they will never figure out how.
Health classes in Texas, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana do not require teachers to provide any medical information about HIV, and these are some of the states being hit the hardest.
Maybe it makes sense for us to start educating our kids on the birds and the bees, it could save their lives.
